Talking like a pirate is half the fun of playing pirates, am I right?  I guess I’m not the only one who thinks so since there is a talk like a pirate day each year on September 19.  I know I have been known to use an arrrrggghhh matey now and then around the house.

Pirates are a fun craft time for your preschooler or kindergartner.  They can make a pirate hat and an eye patch as well, grab your paper sword and pretend to sail the seven seas.

Use the pirate ship to move around the map and discover the oceans of the world for a little geography lesson.

The ideas are endless to engage your kiddos in with pirate ships.

We love paper crafts in our house because I don’t need to shop for a lot of items to make craft time fun.  Just print out the template, grab your scissors, something to color with, and some glue, and watch the magic happen.

If you have kids who love creating, throw some extra things on the table, like glitter or pom poms, and see what they can create.

Don’t jump to the loot(I mean freebie at the end of the post) too quickly, matey, or you may miss the fun pirate facts and hilarious pirate jokes!

Pirate Facts

Piracy has been a part of human history since ancient times. Records of pirate activity date back to at least the 1400s, with some evidence of even earlier piracy.

The Golden Age of Piracy was a period of time between 1650 and 1720 where piracy was at its peak.  A large number of pirate ships operated all over the world, from the Caribbean to the Indian Ocean.  During this period, piracy was practiced by a large number of sailors who had become unemployed or were looking for new opportunities.  This period of piracy saw large-scale attacks on merchant ships, which often resulted in the capture of valuable cargo.  As a result, pirates became notorious for their brutality and greed during this period, making it one of the most notorious periods in maritime history.

The Jolly Roger was a symbol used by pirates to communicate their presence to their victims.  By flying the Jolly Roger, pirates were signaling to their potential victims that they were there and that they should surrender without a fight.  The black flag with white skull and crossbones was designed to inspire fear in those who saw it, and to let them know that they had no chance against the pirates.
